About
Seattle Jewish Community School (SJCS) welcomes students, families, and educational professionals to an inclusive school community, inspired by Jewish values and intellectual traditions. We celebrate the joys of learning and community while preparing students to influence their world for the good. Our vision is to make a positive difference in our community and beyond, championing social justice and the dignity of difference. Since 1992, SJCS has been a place of joyful learning, rooted in community and Jewish values, including the timeless Jewish intellectual traditions of prizing questions, welcoming discourse, and pursuing wisdom along with knowledge. We draw inspiration from our setting as the Seattle Jewish Community School: acknowledging and honoring that we reside on the land of the Coast Salish People, appreciating the wonder that surrounds us, and recognizing our responsibility to steward the environment through sustainable practices.
Why We're Green
At SJCS, our name reflects who we are, starting with our identity as ‘Seattle Jewish’ Community School. We aim to draw on the very best of the civic culture of our hometown and also on the richness of our Jewish heritage, including its emphasis on the sanctity of all creation and the responsibility to steward resources thoughtfully, without waste. Year over year we continue to improve our systems; installing energy efficient lighting; having our 5th grade students teach the school about appropriate use of garbage, compost, and recycling bins and then help students sort their refuse into the appropriate bins; place compost bins in all bathrooms to collect paper towels. Our curriculum includes nature-based learning at Green Lake Park, units on animals and the human effects on their habitats, and field trips to city composting sites and Climate Pledge Arena. We aim to routinely track our processes to continue our consistent improvement and responsible environmental stewardship.
