About
The Museum of African American Art (MAAA) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) institution founded in 1976 by artist and scholar Dr. Samella Lewis. Located on Level 2 at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza shopping mall in Los Angeles at 3650 W Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Suite 283, MAAA provides free admission and serves as an accessible cultural hub for students, families, and lifelong learners. Our mission is to educate visitors of all ages about the arts through the lens of African American culture, exhibit works by outstanding local artists, and preserve important collections such as the Palmer C. Hayden Collection. Through its repurposed mall space, the museum reaches a broad audience by inviting visitors who might be shopping nearby to experience free art exhibitions.
Why We're Green
MAAA minimizes environmental impact by repurposing an existing mall space as its main gallery, encouraging public transit access, digitizing archives to reduce paper waste, donating old art frames to another nonprofit art organization for reuse (instead of discarding them), and promoting sustainability through education and community engagement. Our green practices support both cultural and ecological resilience.
