About
The Museum of African American Art (MAAA) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) institution founded in 1976 by artist and scholar Dr. Samella Lewis. Located in the Baldwin Hills–Crenshaw Plaza in Los Angeles at 3650 W Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Suite 283, MAAA provides free admission and serves as an accessible cultural hub for students, families, and lifelong learners. Our mission is to educate visitors of all ages about the arts through the lens of African‑American culture, exhibit works by outstanding local and diaspora artists and preserve important collections such as the Palmer C. Hayden Collection.
Tucked inside a mall space the museum reaches a broad audience, inviting visitors who might be shopping nearby to discover art and meaning.
Why We're Green
MAAA minimizes environmental impact by using existing mall space, encouraging public transit access, digitizing archives to reduce paper waste, and promoting sustainability through education and community engagement. Our green practices support both cultural and ecological resilience.
